Mezze & Moroccan

A Capella (184c Wells Rd, BS4 2AL)
Some lovely mezze here (olives, dolmades (vineleaves) and hummus) which you can have as a platter. Their tasty-sounding salads are made fresh to order so you can just have them omit any dairy (sundried & fresh tomato salad; mango, olive & cucumber). They are pretty famous in Totterdown for their pizza, and have an impressive list of vegetarian pizza that can be made vegan without cheese. A Capella was number 1 in the 2013 Trip Advisor pick of pizzerias across the UK.

Al Bab Mansour (St Nicholas Market)
Moroccan food is always amazing, and this little cafe doesn't disappoint. Having been to Morocco last year, I can tell you that this place is the real thing! I love the decor here, and can highly recommend the delicious mint tea.

Biblos (82 Mina Road, St Werburghs, BS2 9XW; apparently others are opening soon!)
It's a running joke between my boyfriend and I that these are never open - we tried to go here about three times after we'd first tried the great food and they were shut every time. Fortunately, when we tried a week ago, they were indeed open. They do mezza, which is £8ish per person and amazing value. You get hummus/bab ganoush, spicy potatoes, rice, salad, potato pastry, falafels, stuffed vine leaves and bread (with the option of adding meat for an extra quid or so). They also do breakfast, but I haven't tried that yet. This listing says it's open Mon-Sat 11am-11pm.

Boca Bar (Paintworks, Bath Rd, BS4 3EH)
Pizza is available with lots of toppings (minus the cheese): sundried tomato, caramelised onions, olives, spinach, butternut squash, marinated artichokes, roasted peppers. In fact, they say that their Amazonia pizza works really well as a vegan option without the cheese, so they have thought about us! I personally love a good pizza crammed full of veggies. They also have chips, olive and bread & olive oil. They have a deli counter with tabbouleh and hummus, and I bet their Boca mixed salad can be veganised (mixed leaves, squash, olives, pine nuts, pumpkin seeds). I went there today (21/6/15) and I also saw mezze being advertised, but can't see any mention of it on their website. This place is very kid-friendly with lots of open space - children welcome until 9:30pm.

Eat a Pitta (Kiosk 3b, Broadmead (outside Boots); St Nic's Market) - added 18/10/15
The idea behind Eat a Pitta is healthy fast food. This is true (their salad could be eaten on its own) but it is also really tasty and really cheap. They have the aforementioned salad, hummus and more falafels than you can shake a stick at. It's become a firm favourite in Bristol and I can see why. All of their offerings are vegan, except unfortunately the tahini sauce, and everything but the pitta and cous cous is gluten free, too. If you go to the one in St Nic's you can see all the piles of salad and it looks amazing!

Edna's Kitchen (cabin in Castle Park near Union St)
This may be a humble cabin, but gosh the food is good. They do wraps and salads with delicious falafels - a lot of this food is vegan and they can tell you exactly what is in everything. Not a bad price either! Gets five stars from Time Out Magazine and they can also do catering, too.

Falafel King (Waterfront; Cotham Hill)
Vegan friendly, but I can never finish a whole pitta. Perhaps a bit bland without sauce, but the spicy chili sauce doesn't lie - it's super hot, and sometimes, they put far too much on. The falafels are always tasty, though!

Update (May 2013)
Please ignore what is written above. I was clearly a fool in my younger days (and I can now finish a whole pitta). If you buy them at the waterfront, they cost only £3.50 (£3.95 on Cotham Hill), which is excellent value for money. They are also totally delicious, especially all the nice salad you get with them. I stand by my assertion about the hot sauce though.

Mezze Palace (Small Street, near St Nicks Market, just off the centre)
This place was recommended by some friends of ours many times, so we had to try it out. When we got there, I couldn't believe that it was only £5 for five starters and a main at lunch time! The food was delicious, and the restaurant itself was really different (have a look at the pic on the site), in a classy, underground setting. They do the best hummus in Bristol - really, I dream of the stuff - and I really love their friend cauliflower (which is weird, as I am usually fairly ambivalent about the stuff).

Update
This place was formerly called Mazati, but has now been re-named. I went there the other day and the menu was, as far as I could tell, the same - even the waiter was the same. Verdict: this place is still well worth a visit!

Mr Falafel (126 Church Rd and 60 Stokes Croft)
I stumbled upon their website purely by accident when I was looking for something else and was pleased to discover that they list all their vegan food. They have everything you might expect (hummus, baba ganoush, falafels) but they're not cheap, with broad beans alone coming in at £4.50, although their veggie mezze platter is probably good value at £6.50. Oddly, their website lists lamb as being vegan... several times.

Schnafel (Clifton Down)
This place is only listen in the Middle Eastern section because it has falafels. The food here is tasty, and the portion sizes are good. The falafels are moist, and they have a wonderful array of salads including chopped carrot, tabbouleh and butterbean, all of which were free. Pittas are also served with a dollop of hummus. I had a massive pitta with chips and a drink for £4.95.

Souk Kitchen (227 North St, Bedminster; 59 Apsley Rd, Clifton)
As their menu isn't labelled, I asked Souk Kitchen on Facebook if they offer vegan food and received this response: "we have lots of mezze dishes that are already/can be altered to be vegan. Just ask your server and they'll go through your options." They do lots of nice-sounding mezze, including the old vegan staple: hummus. Here is a nice review from The Everyday Vegetarian.

Tobacco Factory (Raleigh Road)
I've been to the theatre here so many times, but have never eaten there. Maybe next time! Check out the sample menu - they have lots of tasty-sounding mezze.

The Windmill (14 Windmill Hill)
This lovely pub does some great vegan mezze. Just tell them you're vegan and they'll sort you out - they have a platter with olives, hummus, vine leaves salad and bread for 10.95 (large)/ 6.95 (small). They also offer light bites for £4.45: Hummus, bread and balsamic oil; olives, bread and balsamic oil.
